A perfect 2-day travel itinerary to Broome
Day 1 - Gantheaume Point, Simpson Beach, Town Beach, Coconut Well, Willie Creek Pearl Farm & James Price Point
Today we’ll start off by exploring some of the beautiful spots in the direct vicinity of Broome itself. Start of the day with a visit to Gantheaume Point. Make sure to take your time and walk in between the beautful rock formations.
Next we’ll be heading to Simpson Beach. I personally found the beach to be a bit underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll definitely be able to take some beautiful pictures as the color scheme is quite special with the red sand, blue water an green bushes blending together. I just wouldn’t spend a lot of time here due to its industrial location and the factories in the background. What I did like is the drive on the dirt road connecting Gantheaume Point to Simpson Beach. The dirt has a deep red color which is so distinctive for Broome and the Kimberley Region. This is a very short dirt road so this might be perfect if you’re not confident driving off-road and just want a taste of what it’s like for a few kilometers.
After a quick visit to Simpson Beach I’d suggets you to drive back to Broome and have lunch at Town Beach. There are many shaded picnic tables here just next to the carpark as well as BBQ’s if you’re planning on making your own lunch. There were two foodtrucks parked here as well if you’re not planning on making your own lunch.
After lunch it’s time to drive a bit further out of town towards the Dampier Peninsula. First stop is the Coconut Well. It’s best visited during high tide to see the rock pools form.
Next and final stop today is James Price Point. This is where I’d suggest you set up camp for the night. There are several spots on the red coloured cliffs edge where you can park your car/van to camp. there were 3 other cars the night we camped there but there is more than enough space between the camping spots. The red cliffs are just magnificent around sunset time. Bear in mind this is a free camp and has no facilities. Also the dirt road leading up to this point is very beautiful but not in the best condition with some badly corrugated parts. Still, it’s definitely worth the drive as this was one of the best places I’ve camped during my time in Australia.
If you arrive a bit early you could stop by Willie Creek Pearl Farm on the way to James Price Point so check out one of the many pearl farms Broome is well known for. You can do this the next morning when driving back to Broome as well.
Day 2 - Red Sand Beach, Cable Beach, Courthouse Markets, Sun Pictures
Wake up on the beautiful cliffs of the Dampier Peninsula at James Price Point.
Start driving back on the corrugated roads towards Broome. Once you get back on the Broome Highway take a left instead of going right back to Broome. A detour to Red Sand Beach is an absolute must before returning to Broome. Make sure not to skip this place as it was my personal favourite during my visit to Broome. Again, the deep red dirt right next to the blue water and the green bushes in the sea were an incredible sight. The firt road was pretty smooth as well. We saw heaps of pelicans as well which was a nice sight in these spectucular colors.
Drive back to Broome and relax on Cable Beach or have a drink at the Cable Beach House. Ofcourse no Broome travel itinerary would be complete without a sunset at Cable Beach so make sure to stay here long enough.
Finish the day with a walk at one of the markets such as the Thursday night or full moon market at Town Beach or the Courthouse Market during the weekend.
Another fun way to end the day is go to Sun Pictures to watch a movie in open air.
